Mother-Daughter 2024 Photoshoot Ideas

1.Recreate Old Photos

It’s time for you to find inspiration from past memories you cherish! Making old family photos come alive again by recreating them is a fun and creative idea for your next mother-daughter photoshoot. Plus, searching for the photos is an experience in itself, you will go through so many memories and I can promise it will be worth it. When you have a photo you’d like to recreate, share it with your photographer. They will help you find the right location that’s similar and advise you on clothing, hairstyles, and makeup. Yours is to mimic the pose of the original photo and have fun!

2. By the Water

I believe you can’t go wrong with taking pictures by the water whether it be along a river or by the ocean. Mother-daughter photoshoots at the beach are very popular and with a reason. Soaking in the sunshine, collecting some shells, and making great memories along the way.

3. Street Style

Plan a street-style shoot outside of a cafe you both like, near a fountain or flower stand. It’s a great way to show off your personal style and the city you live in! Another idea is to take coffee to go or include props like shopping bags from your favorite clothing store. Ask your photographer to shoot at different angles for a more edgy look.

4. In the backyard

This theme is perfect for mothers and daughters who enjoy the casual, laid-back atmosphere, in the comfort of their backyard. It combines the beauty of a natural setting with the intimacy of your own place. You can even lay out a beautiful picnic blanket and arrange a casual picnic spread. All you need is a basket, plates of your favorite snacks, fruits, sandwiches, or a homemade meal. The photographer will capture the pure, candid moments of you both enjoying and bonding over picnic activities.

5. Dance Party

Whether you’re at home or in the middle of the street, breaking a dance will definitely make you laugh from the heart, giving the photographer lots of opportunities for great candid photographs. Plus, having a mother-daughter dance party photoshoot is a great way to break the ice if you aren’t keen on taking photographs. I really can’t think of a better way to capture fun mother-daughter moments!

6. At Home Session

This is the perfect option for mothers and daughters who prefer a more private and personal setting. The comfort and intimacy of your own home will definitely help you feel comfortable and relaxed. It is also a great way to creatively show the simple, everyday moments you cherish, from reading books together to baking cookies in the kitchen.

7. Black and White Elegance

A Black and White Elegance photoshoot brings a classic and timeless charm to mother-daughter photography. The focus here is mainly on expressions, emotions, and the deep connection between you two. Without the influence of color, the viewer’s attention is drawn to the subjects’ faces and their expressions. The play of light and shadow becomes a critical element in black and white photography and a skilled photographer can use this to create stunning portraits that will be treasured for years to come.

8. Creative Collaboration

As a big lover of arts and crafts myself, of course, I would advise you to have a creative session! Whether you’re into painting, crafting, or scrapbooking, this cooperative activity will provide an array of emotions, worth capturing.

9. Outdoor Exploration

Going with the flow and exploring hidden alleyways of the city or a forest nearby, creates a unique and memorable photoshoot. Relax and become tourists for a little bit! You can take a Polaroid camera as a prop and take photos of each other.

10. Balloons Party

Who doesn’t love balloons? This theme is about celebrating special moments of joy and connection. Surrounding yourselves with vibrant balloons, creates a playful and joyful atmosphere, like this one, where they were celebrating the little girl’s 3rd birthday. They even matched the balloons with their outfits, so adorable!

What should I wear to a mother-daughter photo shoot?

One of the most common questions I get asked is: What should we wear for our Photoshoot? That is why I created several general guidelines that I will share with you to help you get started picking your outfits. None of these rules are strict, find what best suits your style all while keeping in mind what is most flattering in photos.

Stick to a Similar Color Palette

When choosing outfits, I always recommend coordinating instead of matching. Sticking to a similar color palette is a great starting point – with those colors executed through a mix of a few patterns and solids. Maybe you’ll go for muted colors, neutrals with one pop of a bold color (girls’ dress, mom’s shoes?), floral dress for mom, daughter wearing colors from the pattern, or I’ve even seen black and white executed beautifully.

Consider Your Home Decor Style

The ultimate goal is for you to print and display your photos from our session around your home. Initially, you want this art to blend in with your home and reflect your overall style. So think about the overall style of your home decor and use it as inspiration for your photoshoot outfits. If your decor is mostly neutrals, then perhaps that’s the way to go with your outfits. If you have fun pops of color throughout your home then your colorful outfit will fit in perfectly. Maybe your decor is mostly white – so make sure your photographer edits your favorite photos in black and white as these photos will tie in nicely.

Texture and Movement

Incorporate textures and movement into your outfits to add depth and dimension to your photos. Think about flowy fabrics, ruffles, lace, or even contrasting textures like leather and silk. And I can’t stress this enough - You want clothing that flows, adding movement and interest to your photos. Not only does it look magical in photographs but it’s comfortable. Think of your inner little girl who wants to dance and twirl! I promise it can make all the difference! These elements will create visual interest and make your photos waaay more dynamic.

Avoid Logos

While a statement piece can be fun, in 2024, avoid wearing clothing with large logos or busy prints. These can distract from the focus of the photos, which is the beautiful connection between you and your daughter. Opt for simple, classic pieces that will stand the test of time. If you can! Again, maybe your son is going through a phase where he will only wear his Spiderman shirt, or your daughter is obsessed with Barbie. While logos aren’t preferable, if they tell a story of who your child is right now, then that’s all part of the fun.

Don’t forget the accessories!

Accessorize with intention, to add personality and flair to your outfits. Hats, scarves, jewelry, and even statement shoes can elevate your look and tell a story. Think headbands or bows for the little girls, dapper little hats for boys! Choose accessories that reflect your individual styles and complement your chosen color palette.

What tips and tricks can help make a mother-daughter photoshoot successful?

  1. Hire A Local Photographer

Finding a local photographer can be tricky – you want someone who has the right skills and style, but also someone who’s close enough to shoot your session. Here are some things to keep in mind when choosing the right photographer:

  • Word-of-mouth matters: Ask your friends and family for recommendations. They might know a talented local photographer who specializes in stunning portraits.

  • Check out their work: Before reaching out, browse the photographer's online gallery or ask for samples. This will help you get a feel for their style and ensure it aligns with your vision and aesthetic.

  • Understand the costs: Discuss the session fee and the number of edited images included.

  • Ask to meet beforehand: I always like to meet my clients beforehand, as it helps us see how our energy matches. Your photographer should be there with you every step of the way (from planning the shoot, advising on what to wear, how to pose, etc), as well as being your personal cheerleader! For the two of you to shine in your true light, you need to feel comfortable with the photographer.

2. Choose your ideal location

What's most important is finding a location that's unique to you and your daughter. Here are a few ideas of great spots for photos:

  • Think outside the box: Parks, your favorite street cafe, beaches, and even spa days are all fantastic options! Let your creativity flow and choose a location that reflects your personality and memories.

  • Consider the season and time of day: Local photographers often know the best spots and times for optimal natural lighting. For example, meet Luci & Lori, a unique and beautiful mother-daughter duo, both dressed in linen handmade clothes by the mum! We took these outdoor photos at the end of the day, to create a magical atmosphere in natural lightning.

  • Studio session: This is a perfect way to capture the special occasion and create beautiful images in a controlled environment with artificial lighting. You can even bring along some props or dress up in matching outfits for a unique touch.

  • A sentimental place: If you're looking for a special and meaningful location, why not choose a place that holds sentimental value to you? It could be a historical site, a favorite family vacation spot, or even your own backyard.

No matter which location you choose, remember to consider your personal style and the message you want to convey through your photos. Ask your photographer to help you pick out the right colors, props, and outfits that will best represent your special relationship and create the atmosphere you’d feel most comfortable in.

3. Include Props (that have a meaning!)

What kind of creative props would make a great addition to a mother-daughter photoshoot? There are plenty of options for adding creative props to a mother-daughter photoshoot, like:

  • A certain type of flower - Adding flowers into your photoshoot can bring a touch of natural beauty and pop of color. You could both hold bouquets of flowers, create flower crowns, or even scatter petals around you

  • Family heirloom

  • Stuffed animal - Can symbolize the comfort and closeness between a mother and daughter and create playful moments

  • Element from a shared hobby

  • Favorite book - You can sit together reading the book and giggle at their favorite pages

  • Elements from nature - Simply running through a field, playing with water or picking up a blade of grass can be a beautiful moment

Remember, the key to choosing props is to make sure they reflect your personality, interests, and the unique bond you share.

4. Embrace Candid Photos

2024 is all about capturing the genuine laughter, joy, and connection between you two. Don't worry about being perfect or getting everything right. Candid moments are all about capturing the real you, imperfections and all. These imperfections will add to the authenticity and charm of your photos. Before your photoshoot, let your photographer know that you want them to capture the natural moments that unfold throughout the session.

5. Do a Shared Activity

Incorporating a shared activity into your photoshoot is a great way to create a relaxed and enjoyable experience. Whether it's baking cookies, reading a book together, or playing a game, doing something you both enjoy will help you to feel comfortable and at ease in front of the camera.

To sum up

I've provided these guidelines to answer common questions and spark your creativity, but ultimately, it's your photoshoot! Don't feel bound by rules or expectations. Embrace your individuality, wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident, and try out as many different ideas as you wish!

Like I said, my sessions are all about relaxed fun and capturing the genuine love and connection between you two.
